While many other patients had issues requiring a new hip prothesis, our patient required the adjustment of a previous one. After long research, we discovered the problem with our patient wasn’t evident in the patient profile but rather in the x ray.

<aside> ✅ It is important to be very meticulate in diagnosing patients. Visual clues can be just as useful as verbal ones.

• The X-ray images seemed very similar. Upon glancing at the 5 and 7 year hip implants within the patient, there were no visible differences.

• While we were investigating the difference in hole size between the two images, the true culprit lie within the bon surrounding the implant and how the majority of it has deteriorated or lost density.
• This supports our diagnosis of aseptic loosening as a cause of osteolysis

This experience taught me an important lesson about biomedical engineering. As much as this area is logically and mechanically based on devices, it is also a biomedical field meaning the patient body itself is also just as important.
